Early Life and Military Career
Chelsea Elizabeth Manning, born Bradley Edward Manning on December 17, 1987, is an American activist and whistleblower. She is a former United States Army intelligence analyst who gained notoriety for leaking classified information to WikiLeaks.
Leaking to WikiLeaks
While working as an intelligence analyst in Iraq in 2010, Manning provided WikiLeaks with hundreds of thousands of military and diplomatic records. These leaks included videos of civilian casualties, diplomatic cables, and military strategy documents.
Guilty Verdict and Imprisonment
In 2013, Manning was found guilty on charges including espionage for leaking the secret military files. She was sentenced to 35 years in prison, but her sentence was later commuted by President Barack Obama in 2015.
