Olivier Giroud to Retire from International Duty
After Euro 2024
The French record goalscorer will step down after next summer's tournament
Olivier Giroud, France's record goalscorer, has announced his intention to retire from international duty after Euro 2024. The 36-year-old striker made the announcement on his social media channels on Wednesday.
"After much thought, I have decided to retire from international football after Euro 2024," Giroud wrote. "It has been an incredible honor to represent my country for the past 15 years, and I am incredibly grateful for the memories and experiences that I have had during that time.
Giroud made his debut for France in 2008 and has since gone on to score 53 goals in 118 appearances. He is France's all-time leading goalscorer, ahead of Thierry Henry. Giroud was part of the France squad that won the 2018 World Cup and was also a key player in the team's run to the final of Euro 2016.
Giroud's decision to retire from international duty comes after a successful season with AC Milan, where he won the Serie A title. He has since joined Los Angeles FC in the Major League Soccer.
